Osmosis Jones is an innovative comedy split between live action featuring a slovenly Bill Murray and animated sequences of his flagging fatty body. He plays a slumpy single parent who eats like a pig and tends zoo animals for a living. If he had heeded his daughter's advice to shape up, then he wouldn't have gulped down a bad egg and introduced himself and his several trillion cells to a nasty virus named Thrax (voiced by Laurence Fishburne).
The central conceit of the cartoon portion shines: Murray's body is a teeming, polluted metropolis complete with law enforcement (Chris Rock) and self-serving politicians (William Shatner). In a self-conscious play on Lethal Weapon-like interracial buddy flicks, Rock's renegade white blood cell cop is Mel Gibson to the Danny Glover of straightlaced cold tablet Drix (David Hyde Pierce). Sounds promising, and it is. Unfortunately the live action half is helmed by the Farrelly Brothers. Their usual gross-out bodily function hijinks render crass all the corporal creativity found in Osmosis Jones's cartoon moments.
