Baumbach's New York story about a small group of young, quasi-intellectuals struggling with relationships has its inspired moments, but it's not as fresh as his previous indie effort, Kicking and Screaming. When Lester (Stoltz), a guy with chronic low self-esteem, becomes paranoid that his girlfriend (Sciorra) hasn't entirely severed ties with her ex (Eigeman), he decides to spy on him by attending his therapy group. Using his roommate's name, Lester ends up befriending the ex, and the white lies escalate with all the frustrating silliness of a Three's Company episode.
