Rural 1960's Kansas provides the backdrop for this dark, twisted tale about a drifter (Vaughn) who finds himself entangled in the lives of his new employer, sadistic widow Delilah Potts (Capshaw) and her mute and damaged son Flyboy (Davies). A climactic, disturbing denouement more than makes up for some painfully slow pacing. The cast gives stellar performances; Capshaw's venomously oppressive villainess is perfectly fleshed out, and Davies brilliantly portrays her profoundly abused son. The Potts' ranch, with its dark interiors rife with secrets, perfectly illustrates the corruption that lays just beneath the surface of seemingly idyllic small-town America.
