It's difficult to recall a narrative film in which music played such an important role. Glass's mesmerizing electronic score intensifies the film's stunning, often surreal imagery. Glass and cinematographer Deakins are in perfect sync, which is crucial in this film of few words. Scorsese poignantly chronicles the life of the 14th Dalai Lama from his discovery at age two through his flight into exile at age 24. Unlike the Brad Pitt vehicle Seven Years in Tibet, Kundun thoughtfully explores the religious rituals of Buddhism and contemplates holiness without being prohibitively high minded.
