A young basketball player named Jesus Shuttleworth (Allen) tries to keep his feet on the ground as his hoop dreams take off. Not an easy thing to do when college recruiters dangle promises of NBA fame, money, and sex in your face, and your girlfriend and uncle are already earmarking your future salary. But it's Jesus's estranged, paroled dad Jake (Washington) who has the biggest stake in the hot-shot's basketball future: the governor of New York will reduce Jake's murder sentence if his son agrees to play for the politician's alma mater. Jesus disses his too-little, too-late dad; but when Jake refuses to just quietly hang around courtside, this Spike Lee joint turns into a poignant father-son one-on-one.
