Wong Kar-Wai's intimate portrait of a gay Chinese couple's troubled relationship takes viewers on a satisfying emotional journey. Lai Yiu-Fai (Chiu-Wai) and Ho Po-Wing (Cheung) leave Hong Kong for Argentina hoping a fresh start will save their foundering relationship. However, soon after they arrive in Buenos Aires, they quarrel and part ways. Ho prostitutes himself and returns to Lai after he is badly beaten. Lai nurses him back to health, but they fall back into their usual patterns of behavior. Only Lai's friendship with Chang (Chang Chen) allows Lai to see the destructive nature of his relationship with Ho. Although thin on plot, this bittersweet love story is filled with subtle emotional nuances, and the black-and-white sequences juxtaposed with vivid color images succeed in creating a poignant film.
