Pellington's roots in music video pop up frequently in this flashy coming-of-age story that follows the unlikely friendship of two very different young men. Just returned from service in the Korean War, they search for fulfillment and meaning in their lives. Sonny (Davies), a nerdy, angst-ridden photographer, desperately needs to break free from his repressive, religious zealot of a mother (Clayburgh). Gunner (Affleck), a chiseled athlete who wants to soften his image, thinks he can learn a few things from Sonny. Unfortunately, much of their bonding and soul searching comes at the expense of the women they screw, with the result a misogynistic tone.
