This dark tale about a vacationing family that is taken hostage, humiliated and tortured, purports to be an objection to cinematic violence. Haneke tries to break the spell of voyeuristic violence by having his villains (Frisch, Giering) look directly into the camera during particularly frightening moments. But it's all more sadistic than enlightening. Brilliant performances from a solid cast, however.
