Forces of Nature is a soggy romp through odd-couple romantic comedy. An airplane mishap sends an uptight copywriter (Ben Affleck) jaunting across the country with a sexy free spirit (Sandra Bullock). Affleck's a nervous fiancée on his way to tie the knot, but along the way he finds himself falling for Bullock's rebelliousness. Together they prance though K-Mart, befriend elderly people and little children, and get drunk in a backwoods gay bar.
The plot isn't unusually horrible, but the script is — substituting character development for rote dialogue, and underrealizing the lead actors' potential. In contrast with the simplistic, eager-to-please script, the conclusion serves up an unsatisfying twist. The best part of Forces of Nature may be the DreamWorks hailstorms that rain on the already-damp parade.
