Dwight Yoakam
Tomorrow's Sounds Today
- Reprise
One of the most formidable and reliable forces in all of country music, Dwight Yoakam has been coasting during the past few years, issuing hits packages (Last Chance For a Thousand Years) and stripped down acoustic hits packages (Dwightyoakamacoustic.net).
Now, with the highly-anticipated Tomorrow's Sounds Today, his first set of new material since 1998, Yoakam unfortunately shows little of the fire that shot him to stardom.
He reteams with his Bakersfield twang mentor Buck Owens on three cuts, including their mournful songwriting collaboration “The Sad Side of Town” and does shake a tail-feather on the lead single “What Do You Know About Love.”
But there is a sense of complacency slipping through other songs such as “Time Spent Missing You” and “A Promise You Can't Keep.” And Yoakam's remake of Cheap Trick's “I Want You to Want Me” fails to capture the magic he showed when he covered Queen's “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” a few years back.
