On paper, Double Take is a black buddy chase comedy based on a short story by lauded British writer Graham Greene. In reality, it's a mess, the kind of movie that people will quickly forget—or want to.
Respected Manhattan banker Daryl Chase (Orlando Jones) is framed for laundering Mexican drug money. The C.I.A. is trying to help, the framers are trying to kill him, and policemen everywhere are on the lookout. Daryl teams up with wily street hustler Freddy Tiffany (Eddie Griffin) and they switch identities in a race to the Mexican border. Ivy-league banker and street-smart con man traveling south through America: the setup is perfect for a smart take on attitudes about black identity, or at least some funny scenes here and there. But Double Take is very badly done, the first real flop of the 21st century. It steals gems from other movies and buries them in the dirt. Like Eddie, the movie guffaws gratingly when it should smile.
