A Disney-fied hiccup in time sends 8-year-old Rusty Duritz (Spencer Breslin) about 30 years into the future to reform his pinched, unfulfilled adult self (Russ, as played by Bruce Willis). Forget Dickensian spirits and magical interlopers; in the year 2000, the “second chance” narrative takes a literal turn into self-help as repartee between hardened businessman and his hopeful inner child provides the heartwarming, transformatory experience Willis' agent has come to embrace.

As slickly packaged as Disney's The Kid is, the film has an easygoing, confident clip to its pacing. The script has some wit built in, which boosts the overall film. Willis and Breslin work well off each other. Lily Tomlin puts in a great cameo. The Kid is aimed slightly more at adults, seeking out the folks who identify with Russ' cutthroat image consultant more than the 8-year-old still awed by a starry sky.
