Adam Sandler is making efforts to grow up-and he's doing it by pouring on the sentimentalism and pitting his infantile humor against that of a 5-year-old boy. A law school graduate working as a tollbooth collector, Sonny Koufax (Sandler) becomes the cute kid's accidental caretaker, but soon develops a strong bond with the boy. They both love bodily fluid jokes, for example.
When he's not trying on the accoutrements of parenthood, Sandler is endorsing brands such as Hooters and McDonalds, and romancing an acquaintance's attractive sister (Joey Lauren Adams). For Sandler, Big Daddy is an awkward step in a strange direction, far enough from maturity to please his fans.
