Beautiful Creatures is a new British film that attempts to mix Tarantino/Guy Ritchie-type pop violence and black humor with a storyline meant to depict strong women. Dorothy and Petula (Susan Lynch and Rachel Weisz) live in Glasgow. The half-accidental death of a noxious beau unites them. Mob ties, cinematic whatnot, and the women's poorly executed fake kidnapping plan secure a predictably contorted and violent movie.
Lynch and Weisz troupe through Beautiful Creatures, performing their best despite the obvious failings of a film that seeks to reverse the misogyny of Guy Ritchie's macho Brit escapades (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch) by simply having women pull the trigger. Testosterone rules in Beautiful Creatures, a stylish but empty example of a genre in desperate need of an estrogen dose.
