Along Came a Spider is a thriller with dignity but no fingerprints. It lacks a personal touch. Carefully spun webs of intrigue to lure in the viewer are absent. As for the dignity, Morgan Freeman provides that, assisted by a good cast operating at half-power.
The film is a sequel to Kiss the Girls. Seven's influence remains strong. The kidnapping plot allows for nice variations on the smart, evil murderer versus wise world-weary cop theme, including a game of cat-and-mouse between the rich megalomaniac kidnapper (Michael Wincott) and his kidnappee (Mika Boorem), as well as with Freeman's wise FBI man.
Along Came a Spider overloads a basic storyline with functionless details and half-baked explanations and suddenly we're presented with a brilliant kidnapper who spent two years teaching at a private D.C. school disguised in a latex mask (which nobody noticed), just so that he could kidnap a senator's daughter. What? If you're in the mood for a forensic thriller, than you could do worse than Along Came a Spider, but considered out of its genre, the movie is fairly forgettable.
