The venal god of Mammon is everywhere to be found in this reputedly dignified government publication.

In 1997 there were 18,552,000 people between 25 and 54 who did not work because, plain and simple, they "do not want a job now."

WHERE THE MONEY IS

It's no secret that the most people making the most money reside in New York City ($45,028 per capita in 1996), but I'd wager a fat sum that you had no idea that the Number 2 enclave of high rollers is... San Jose, Calif. ($44,824 per capita).

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

In 1995, 27.7% of credit card holders "hardly ever" paid off their balance and 20.4 % only "sometimes" pay off their balance.

THE RICH GROW GREEDIER

In 1995, people making under $10,000 a year donated an average of 4.3% of their income to charity. People making between $75,000 and $100,000 donated an average of 1.8%.

IS THE MONEY REALLY WORTH IT?

6.1% of workers held more than one job at the same time in 1997.

8.5% of the population worked an average of more than 60 hours a week.

LAZY AND LIKING IT

In 1997 there were 18,552,000 people between the ages of 25 and 54 who did not work because, plain and simple, they "do not want a job now."
