He worked as a statistician in the British War Cabinet and received his Ph.D. from the University of London in 1951 before emigrating to the U.S. where he taught economics. His work analyzing transaction costs spawned subdisciplines in economics devoted to property rights and the economics of law, earning him the Nobel Prize in economics in 1991.
