After studying at Carleton, Laval, and McGill universities, he went into business, ultimately gaining control of Argus Corporation, a Canadian holding company. He became chairman in 1979 and chief executive in 1985 before entering the newspaper business with the purchase of the Daily Telegraph (London) in 1985. He subsequently bought Le Soleil (Quebec) and Le Droit (Ottawa), as well as 40 other small U.S. newspapers. Most recently he has become a commentator on politics and the economy.
