Daryl Chapin Biography

Best Known as: co-creator of the silicon solar cell

Daryl Chapin with Bell Labs colleagues Calvin Fuller and Gerald Pearson developed the first pratical silicon solar cell that powers many hand held devices such as calculators and remote controls. Born in Ellensburg, Washington, Chapin studied at Willamette University and the University of Washington before joining Bell Labs in 1930. Chapin worked as a Bell Labs scientist for over 40 years, and continued to invent until his death on January 19, 1995.
