Engine starting devices and ignition system—Kettering invented the first electrical ignition system and the self-starter for automobiles and the first practical engine-driven generator (the “Delco”). His other scientific work includes research in higher octane gasoline, high compression automobile engines, improved Diesel engine, and a nontoxic and nonflammable refrigerant. (1980)
