chairman and vice chairman of the commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, who in July released a 500+ page report on the tragedy. It called for an overhaul of the intelligence community, including the creation of a cabinet-level intelligence director. The bipartisan report was widely praised for its clarity and detail. In October, it was nominated for a National Book Award. Many of the panel's recommendations were included in the intelligence overhaul legislation, which President Bush signed into law in December.
