former director of the CIA, resigned in June, citing “personal reasons.” His resignation, however, came as the CIA faced withering attacks for not having prevented the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and for distributing intelligence that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction—information that precipitated the U.S.-led war—when no such weapons have been found. Tenet admitted in February that the prewar intelligence on Iraq's nuclear weapons programs and capabilities could have overestimated the actual arsenal. President Bush awarded him the Presidential Medal of Honor in December.
