Sean Patrick O'Malley, 2003 News
Franciscan friar, was named archbishop of Boston in June by the pope. He replaced Cardinal Bernard Law, who resigned the post in December 2002 amid outrage over his handling of the ongoing sexual-abuse scandal. O'Malley played an integral role in the $85 million settlement reached in September between the archdiocese and abuse victims. Often called a people's bishop, O'Malley is widely considered more down-to-earth and compassionate than his predecessor.
