convicted Oklahoma City bomber, was executed by lethal injection in June for detonating a fertilizer bomb that destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in April 1995 and killed 149 adults and 19 children. It was the first execution by the federal government in 38 years. McVeigh was scheduled to be put to death in May, but the date was postponed when the FBI revealed that it had failed to turn over to the defense thousands of documents related to its investigation. The admission further tarnished the reputation of the FBI and its director, Louis Freeh, who had been under fire for not detecting the FBI had an alleged spy, Robert Hanssen, in its ranks.
