Colorado therapists, were convicted in April of child abuse in the death of 10-year-old Candace Newmaker. Newmaker died after undergoing “rebirthing” therapy, in which the therapists wrapped her in a flannel sheet and instructed her to struggle out to simulate birth, thus becoming “reborn” to her adoptive mother. Newmaker spent 70 minutes in the blanket and later died of asphyxiation. Ponder and Watkins were sentenced to 16 years in prison.
