Thomas Watkins LIGON, Congress, MD (1810-1881)
LIGON Thomas Watkins , a Representative from Maryland; born near Farmville, Prince Edward County, Va., May 10, 1810; attended Hampden-Sidney College and the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1830 and 1831; studied law at Yale College; was admitted to the bar in 1833 and practiced in Baltimore 1835-1853 and in other places in Maryland; member of the State house of delegates in 1843; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth and Thirtieth Congresses (March 4, 1845-March 3, 1849); resumed the practice of law; Governor of Maryland 1854-1858; retired from public life to ``Chatham,'' his country place, near Ellicott City, Howard County, Md., where he died January 12, 1881; interment in St. John's Cemetery, Ellicott City, Md.
