Kennedy, a seat subsequently held by appointed senator Paul G. Kirk, took the oath of office on February 4, 2010, and served from February 4, 2010, to January 3, 2013; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 2012; moved to New Hampshire, and was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate from that state in 2014.
