Miles ROSS, Congress, NJ (1827-1903)
ROSS Miles , a Representative from New Jersey; born in Raritan Township, Middlesex County, N.J., April 30, 1827; received a practical English training; engaged with his father in the transportation of freight by water and in the coal business; one of the chosen freeholders of New Brunswick, N.J., 1859-1864; member of the State house of assembly in 1863 and 1864; director of several banks; member of the board of street commissioners in 1865 and 1866; mayor of New Brunswick 1867-1869; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1883); chairman, Committee on Militia (Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1882 to the Forty-eighth Congress; delegate at large to the Democratic National Conventions in 1884, 1888, and 1892; engaged in the wholesale and retail coal business; died in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, N.J., on February 22, 1903; interment in Elmwood Cemetery.
