John JOHNSON, Congress, OH (1805-1867)
JOHNSON John , a Representative from Ohio; born near Dungannon, County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1805; immigrated with his mother to the United States in 1818; settled in Coshocton, Ohio, in 1819; received a limited schooling; learned the tanner's trade; later engaged in merchandising and banking; member of the State senate in 1843 and 1844; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1849 and 1850; elected as an Independent Democrat to the Thirty-second Congress (March 4, 1851-March 3, 1853); was not a candidate for renomination in 1852; retired from political life and resided in Washington, D.C., for several years; returned to Coshocton, Ohio, and engaged in banking and also interested in agricultural pursuits until his death there February 5, 1867; interment in Oakbridge Cemetery.
