James Gould POLK, Congress, OH (1896-1959)

POLK James Gould , a Representative from Ohio; born on a farm in Penn Township, Highland County, Ohio, October 6, 1896; attended elementary school in Highland, Ohio; graduated from New Vienna (Ohio) High School in 1915; during the First World War, while attending the Agricultural College of Ohio State University was inducted into the military service on September 5, 1918, and sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; was discharged on September 19, 1918, due to a physical disability; graduated from Ohio State University in 1919; principal of New Vienna (Ohio) High School 1919-1920; superintendent of schools, New Vienna, 1920-1922; engaged in farming; graduated from Wittenberg College, Springfield, Ohio, in 1923; principal of Hillsboro (Ohio) High School 1923-1928; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second and to the four succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1931-January 3, 1941); was not a candidate for renomination in 1940; special assistant in the Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C., from October 1942 to May 1946; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first and to the five succeeding Congresses and served from January 3, 1949, until his death in Washington, D.C., April 28, 1959; interment in Highland Cemetery, Highland, Ohio.
