James BISHOP, Congress, NJ (1816-1895)

BISHOP James , a Representative from New Jersey; born in New Brunswick, N.J., May 11, 1816; attended Spaulding School and Rutgers College Preparatory School, New Brunswick, N.J.; engaged in mercantile pursuits in New Brunswick; member of the State house of assembly in 1849 and 1850; elected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1855-March 3, 1857); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1856 to the Thirty-fifth Congress; prominent in the rubber trade in New York City; chief of the bureau of labor statistics of New Jersey 1878-1893 and a resident of Trenton; died at Kemble Hall, near Morristown, Morris County, N.J., May 10, 1895; interment in Elmwood Cemetery, New Brunswick, Middlesex County, N.J.
