Herbert Romulus O'CONOR, Congress, MD (1896-1960)

O'CONOR Herbert Romulus , a Senator from Maryland; born in Baltimore, Md., on November 17, 1896; attended the parochial schools; graduated from Loyola College, Baltimore, Md., in 1917 and from the law department of the University of Maryland in 1920; during the First World War served in the United States Naval Reserve; admitted to the bar in 1919 and commenced practice in Baltimore, Md.; member of the staff of the Baltimore Sun and Evening Sun in 1920; assistant State's attorney 1920-1922; appointed people's counsel to the Public Service Commission 1923; State's attorney 1923-1934; State attorney general 1935-1939; Governor of Maryland 1939-1946; chairman of Governors' Conference 1942; chairman of Interstate Commission on Potomac River Basin 1943-1945; president and national chairman of Council of State Governments 1943; national chairman, Interstate Committee on Postwar Reconstruction and Development 1943-1946; director of Fidelity-Baltimore National Bank & Trust Co., and of Arundel Corp.; member, senior advisory council of McCormick & Co.; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from January 3, 1947, to January 3, 1953; was not a candidate for renomination in 1952; chairman, Special Committee on Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce (Eighty-first Congress); continued the practice of law in Baltimore, Md., and Washington, D.C., until his death in Baltimore, Md., March 4, 1960; interment in New Cathedral Cemetery.
