MURPHY Austin John , a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in North Charleroi, Washington County, Pa., June 17, 1927; attended the public elementary schools of New London, Conn.; graduated, Charleroi (Pa.) High School, 1944; B.A., Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pa., 1949; LL.B., University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pa., 1952; United States Marine Corps, 1944-1946; United States Marine Corps Reserve, 1948-1951; admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1953 and commenced practice in Washington, Pa.; Washington County, Pa., assistant district attorney, 1956-1957; member of the Pennsylvania state house of representatives, 1959-1971; member of the Pennsylvania state senate, 1971-1977; delegate, Democratic National Conventions, 1984, 1988; elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-fifth and to the eight succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1977-January 3, 1995); reprimanded by the U.S. House of Representatives on December 18, 1987, for ghost voting and improper use of official resources; was not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Fourth Congress in 1994.
