Asa Leonard ALLEN, Congress, LA (1891-1969)

ALLEN Asa Leonard , a Representative from Louisiana; born on a farm near Winnfield, Winn Parish, La., January 5, 1891; attended the rural schools; was graduated from Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge in 1914; taught in the rural schools of Louisiana; principal of the Georgetown (La.) High School in 1914 and 1915 and of the Verda (La.) High School 1915-1917; superintendent of Winn Parish schools 1917-1922; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1922 and commenced practice in Winnfield, La.; served as city attorney of Winnfield for several years; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fifth and to the seven succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1937-January 3, 1953); chairman, Committee on the Census (Seventy-eighth and Seventy-ninth Congresses); was not a candidate for renomination in 1952; retired and resided in Winnfield, La., until his death January 5, 1969; interment in Winnfield Cemetery.
