Age: 94Egyptian novelist and short-story writer who won the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature—the first Arab writer to do so. His works explored the social and political aspects of modern Egyptian life, often through the eyes of regular citizens. He earned wide acclaim for The Cairo Trilogy: Palace Walk, Palace of Desire, and Sugar Street. An advocate for peace between Egypt and Israel, Mahfouz was targeted by Islamic fundamentalists.
