Age: 78civil rights activist and the widow of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who assumed her husband's campaign for racial equality and social justice after his assassination in 1968, becoming one of the most prominent figures in the movement. She established the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change and led the successful fight to create a federal holiday in her husband's honor. King was criticized for endorsing the attempt by James Earl Ray, Rev. King's assassin, to win a new trial. She thought that Rev. King's murder was a conspiracy.
