Jack Buck
Age: 77, radio voice of the St. Louis Cardinals for almost 50 years; considered one of the game's best storytellers, his body of work includes almost every sport; recognized in 11 halls of fame around the country, including the Pro Football and National Baseball halls of fame; a WWII veteran and Purple Heart recipient; began broadcasting in college at Ohio State in late 1940s; after calling minor league baseball games, he got his first break broadcasting Chicago Cubs games alongside Harry Cary in 1954; retired as Cardinals announcer in 2001; called Monday Night Football games and 17 Super Bowls for CBS radio from 1978-96; Cardinals added a pennant with "That's a winner" on it-a call he made famous after the team's victories-to their roster of retired players' numbers in 2002. He died after a long battle with lung cancer.
