Shawn Walsh
Age: 46University of Maine men's hockey coach, who turned a team that went 27-65 in the three seasons before he arrived into a two-time national champion; made 11 NCAA postseason tournament appearances in 17 seasons at Maine from 1984-2001; won national titles after the 1992-93 and 1998-99 seasons; coached Hobey Baker recipients Scott Pellerin (1992) and Paul Kariya (1993) and 26 other All-Americans while compiling a 399-215-44 record; ranked 11th in career victories among active coaches at the time of his death; won national coach of the year honors in 1995; his use of an ineligible player during the 1991-92 season caused the team to forfeit games; served a one-year suspension after the an NCAA investigation of the entire Maine athletic department in 1993-94; diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, a rare form of cancer in June 2000. He died of cancer.
