S. Dillon Ripley
Age: 87ornithologist who served as secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1964 to 1984. During Ripley's tenure, eight new museums were built, the number of visitors grew nearly threefold, to more than 30 million, and Smithsonian magazine debuted.
