Age: 94Venezuelan novelist and essayist who is considered one of the most influential Latin American writers. His most famous work was also his first, the historical novel Las Lanzas Coloradas (1931), which chronicles Venezuela's fight for independence from Spain. His other works include The Road from El Dorado (1947), a biography of Lope de Aguirre.
