Sid Abel

Hall of Fame player, general manager, coach and broadcaster in the Detroit Red Wings organization; centered the high-scoring “Production Line” between Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay that helped Detroit win the first four of its league-record seven consecutive regular-season titles and three Stanley Cups; team captain 1942-52; career: 472 points (189 goals, 283 assists); scored a league-high 28 goals in 1948-49 and was named league MVP; left Detroit in 1952 and was player-coach in Chicago for two seasons; returned to Detroit and broadcast games before coaching his former team from 1957-70; also coached St. Louis Blues and Kansas City Scouts (now N.J. Devils); Red Wings radio and TV analyst before 1976-77 season; inducted into Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969. He died of heart disease.
