brilliant all-around baseball player who rose to stardom as a right-handed pitcher with the Cleveland Indians and later managed the N.Y. Yankees to a World Series title; 20-game winner seven times over a nine-year span (1948-56); went 23-7 in 1954 when he combined with Bob Feller, Early Wynn and Mike Garcia to form one of baseball's best rotations ever; pitched no-hitter at Detroit (6/30/48); won two games in 1948 World Series; career: 207-128, 3.23 ERA; remarkable .284 average as a pinch-hitter; hit 37 career HRs; seven-time All-Star; retired in 1958; managed Kansas City and Chicago-AL in the 1970s before taking over the Yankees after Billy Martin resigned on July 25, 1978; beat Boston in one-game playoff in 1978 en route to the A.L. pennant and the World Series title; returned to coach Yankees in 1981 and won A.L. pennant; inducted into National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976; remained on Yankees payroll as a scout and advisor up until his death. The cause of his death was not given.
