Harry Walker

left-handed outfielder who won the National League batting title in 1947 and had the deciding hit in the 1946 World Series; nicknamed "The Hat" for his habit of adjusting his cap between pitches; played 11 seasons in the majors including eight with the St. Louis Cardinals; hit a double to left center in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Enos Slaughter, giving the Cardinals the series title over the Red Sox in 1946; appeared in three World Series and two All-Star Games; managed for 20 seasons with St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Houston; first head coach of University of Alabama-Birmingham baseball team; won two Sun Belt North Division titles and had an eight-year record of 211-171. He died of complications from a stroke.
