The members of Son Volt (1994–present) hail from Belleville, Illinois, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, but their music is most often labelled with a hybrid including the term “country.” Their albums include Trace (1995), Straightaways (1997), and Wide Swing Tremolo (1998). Current band members include Jay Farrar, Mike Heidorn, Jim Boquist, bass player; and Dave Boquist, lead guitarist, fiddle and banjo player.

Jay Farrar

Birthplace: Belleville, Illinois

Played in the Primitives in high school, which evolved into Uncle Tupelo (1987–94). Their albums include Depression (1990) and Anodyne (1993). Uncle Tupelo disintegrated when Farrar and fellow founding member Jeff Tweedy had musical disagreements, and Farrar went on to found Son Volt in 1994. He is the main songwriter for the group.

Mike Heidorn

He and Farrar played in the Primitives in high school, which evolved into Uncle Tupelo (1987–94). Their albums include Depression (1990) and Anodyne (1993). Was recruited by Farrar for Son Volt after the breakup of Uncle Tupelo in 1994.
