musiciansR.E.M. found success by producing music that defies typical labels. The band first formed in Athens, Georgia, where its members were attending college. After playing at parties and small clubs, R.E.M. released two singles, “Radio Free Europe” and “Sitting Still,” which sparked a following and national exposure. Though not a commercial success at the time, Murmur (1982) persuaded Rolling Stone Magazine to name R.E.M. Band of the Year. R.E.M. entered the 1990s with back-to-back albums, Automatic for the People (1992) and Out of Time (1991).Other R.E.M. albums include Monster (1994) and New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996). Members include Michael Stipe, vocalist; Mike Mills, bassist; Peter Buck, guitarist; and Bill Berry, drummer.
