Walters left nursing to pursue an acting career. She got her start singing, dancing, and acting in several British stage productions. She won a Tony Award for her portrayal of a contemporary Eliza Doolittle in Broadway's Educating Rita. She earned Oscar nominations for the 1983 film adaptation of the play and for her role as a dance teacher in Billy Elliot (2000). Her other film credits include Personal Services (1987) and Stepping Out (1991).
