Academy and Tony Award-winning film and stage director, producer, writer and actor who earned renown directing plays by Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. His credits include the stage (1947) and film (1951) versions of A Streetcar Named Desire and the film On the Waterfront (1954). In 1952, he testified before the House Committee on Un-American activities admitting membership in the Communist Party, naming other Hollywood members. In 1999 he was presented with an honorary Oscar, a controversial award that angered some Academy members.
