English actress known for her genteel, tea-sipping screen persona and a sexy beach kiss in “From Here to Eternity.“ She was a strikingly versatile actress who lived up to her big roles in “The King and I,“ “An Affair to Remember,“ and “The Sundowners.“ Kerr was nominated for six Academy Awards in four decades without winning. She received an honorary Oscar for her lifetime of work in 1994. In 1969, after 22 years in Hollywood playing the leading lady to Cary Grant, James Mason, Stewart Granger, and Spencer Tracy, she retired from big-screen acting.
