Animated coloratura widely regarded as America's greatest soprano. She appeared as the heroine in more than 50 operas, including Handel's Julius Caesar, Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman and Donizetti's Anna Bolena. She served as director of the New York City Opera (1979–89), the chairwoman of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (1994–2002), and most recently as the chairwoman of the Metropolitan Opera.
