Posthumous Oscars
The Question:
Chadwick Boseman is nominated for a Best Actor Oscar after his death. Has anyone else won an Oscar after they died?
The Answer:
Dozens of people have won Oscars after their deaths, in pretty much every category except Best Director. The most recent was Gil Friesen in 2013 for Best Documentary Feature for 20 Feet from Stardom.
Five people have been nominated for Best Actor after their death, one person has been nominated for Best Actress, and two people have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. These include James Dean, Peter Finch, Spencer Tracy, Massimo Troisi, Jeanne Eagels, Heath Ledger, and Ralph Richardson.
Of those, only Peter Finch won Best Actor and only Heath Ledger won Best Supporting Actor.
A lot of the buzz around Chadwick Boseman's posthumous Oscar season is that he could win both categories. That's never happened before even for a living actor, let alone after their death, and it would make him only the second person to win either award after passing on.
